The 'university novel' or 'campus novel' is a special genre of contemporary fiction, particularily
strong in English and American literature. Interestingly, some of these novels have a special insight into East-Central European history and culture. The seminar - while reading and discussing some of these novels - will examine the following research questions: the generic features of the university novels (realism, social satire, romance and quest motives); their relation to Anglo-American social reality; their relation to the world of 'academia'; their reflections on contemporary cultural and literary theory. Novels to be discussed: Kingsley Amis, Lucky Jim; Malcolm Bradbury, Eating People is Wrong; Rates of Exchange; The History Man; Doctor Criminale; David Lodge, Changing Places; Small World; Nice
Work. Place and Memory: Contemporary
